Electric SUVs Made A Strong Showing At The 2019 LA Auto Show

Audi

Audi has been a leader in the electric vehicle space with its all-electric e-tron, famously advertised during the 2019 Super Bowl and featured in Avengers Endgame. This year, the German car company showcased its all-electric e-tron Sportback and Q5 plug-in hybrid.

The Audi e-tron Sportback is only available in Europe right now, but has a North America release date of Spring 2020. Audi made a few motor-management adjustments and gave the Sportback a slick coupe-ish chop to improve its range by about 20 miles over the e-tron SUV that was released earlier this year. The Sportback is expected to carry a price tag around $75,000.

With a 14.1 kWh battery, the Audi Q5 hybrid SUV has an electric range of over 25 miles and can reach speeds of up to 84 MPH on the battery alone. Not available yet in America, the Q5 hybrid is expected to come in around $67,000.

Bollinger

Amid all the criticism and intrigue of the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T, it’s easy to forget that other companies are developing their own all-electric trucks too. The Detroit-based company, Bollinger, is on a mission to create no-frills, all-electric, 4×4 trucks.

The Bollinger B2 is an all-electric truck capable of carrying 16-foot cargo and towing 7,500 pounds. With an estimated 200 miles of range, the B2’s functional aspects are sure to attract off-roaders from all over.

The Bollinger B1 is an all-electric sport utility truck with a closed bed to give it more of an SUV look. But don’t let the optics fool you. This truck has a 5,000-pound payload and 200-mile range. Both the B1 and B2 have a full-length patented pass through (pictured below).

Ford

While most of the hype about Ford is around the electric F-150, the company showcased its all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUV in LA to an engrossed audience. With all-wheel drive and 230 miles of range, Ford’s newest electric model starts at $43,895. The Mach-E has a target release date of late 2020, so reserve yours today.

Toyota

Toyota famously conquered the hybrid market when it released the Prius worldwide in 2000. Then, it released the RAV4 hybrid SUV before most other carmakers, only to discontinue it in 2014.

This year, the Japanese automaker showcased its new RAV4 Prime hybrid SUV in LA, with an expected release date of late 2020 or early 2021. With 302 horsepower, the RAV4 Prime has a 39-mile electric range. You can sign up for updates about Toyota’s new hybrid here.

Land Rover

Land Rover showcased the Range Rover PHEV and Range Rover PHEV Sport, both of which have an electric range of 19 miles. Since we live in an SUV nation, it’s no surprise that these vehicles were popular attractions at the showcase.

Jaguar

Starting at $69,500, Jaguar’s all-electric I-Pace SUV was voted the European car of the year. The I-Pace has a 234-mile range and can go 0 to 60 MPH in 4.5 seconds.

Subaru

Subaru’s second attempt at a Crosstrek plug-in hybrid is using technology from Toyota’s Prius Prime for about 20 miles of electric range. Starting at $35,145, Subaru is still eligible for the federal tax credit but the company said it has limited availability.

Nissan

Nissan has led the electric auto market since its release of the Nissan LEAF in 2010. The new LEAF Plus leaves its predecessors in the dust with its 226-mile range, but it now has to contend with a slew of competitors promising similar or longer ranges. At $37,510, the LEAF Plus is still an affordable electric option.

MINI (BMW)

The MINI Cooper fanbase will be pleased to see the release of an all-electric MINI. The MINI Cooper SE will carry a competitive price tag of $17,900 after available incentives, with a range of 168 miles. Look for the electric MINI in U.S. dealerships around March 2020.

Karma

It’s hard to look at a Karma vehicle and not see some aesthetic similarities to Tesla. But don’t let that fool you. Karma’s most affordable EV starts at $130,000 and only provides 50 miles of range on one charge. Still, the Karma hybrids are fun to look at, even if the makers aren’t also running a spaceship program.

Beyond this list, automakers like Honda, VW, Volvo, Fiat Chrysler, Kia, Porsche, Mercedes, Rivian, and more are developing plans for new electric models. We’re anticipating a rush of new EV models at next year’s LA Auto Show as more and more carmakers get in the game.

One thing is clear – automakers are finally starting to design EVs that car buyers actually want, like SUVs and trucks. Let’s hope that trend continues.
